Toenail Specialist
Our podiatrists and toenail specialists based in St Albans & Hatfield offer a variety of treatments for toenail issues.
We treat painful feet, whether the cause is ingrown toenails, infection, trauma or another issue.
Ingrown toenails
As ingrown toenail specialists, we’re experienced in diagnosing and treating the problem while keeping pain to a minimum.
How does an ingrown toenail happen?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the corner of a toenail starts to grow in toward the soft flesh. This ingrowth, that usually happens on the big toe, causes inflammation around the area that tends to become painful. They’re often recurrent, which can cause ongoing discomfort and pain in your feet.
It’s important to have your ingrown toenail treated by a toenail specialist as they can quickly become infected.
How to treat ingrown toenails
Ingrown and involuted painful toenails can be managed either routinely or with surgical procedures. As expert chiropodists, we offer partial nail avulsion and cauterisation of the nail bed. This provides a more permanent solution for persistent ingrown toenails.

How do fungal nails occur?
One question that we are often asked is – how do you get a fungal nail infection? The main cause of fungal nail infection is when feet are warm and damp.
This means that if you often have sweaty, hot feet, you’re more likely to suffer from this type of infection.
Complications
If you suffer from diabetes while experiencing a fungal nail infection, it’s very important that you seek treatment from a toenail specialist.
Just like with calluses and corns, any infections or foot injuries with diabetes can lead to further, more serious complications.
Fungal nail treatment
Fungal nails often cause thick toenails. As part of your treatment, a toenail specialist here at the AGM Centre in St Albans and Hatfield will cut and grind the toenail to reduce this thickness.
We will then advise on fungal nail treatments, and offer a total nail removal if needed. Our chiropodists will always ensure that these procedures are performed painlessly with anaesthetic where required.
After this procedure, a toenail specialist will identify if the fungal nail infection will need to have treatment on the nail bed too.
As well as surgical procedures and treatments for issues like fungal infections, our footcare assistants also provide simple nail cutting.
