Callus and Corn Removal
Calluses and corns happen mostly on feet, and they can become sore and painful if left untreated.
As foot specialists, we’re experts in the treatment and removal of calluses and corns that may appear on your feet, toes or hands.
What is a callus?
A callus is a large patch of thick skin that occurs on feet, hands or even sometimes knees. These patches of skin can be raised and look rough, and they can also cause tenderness or pain under the skin in some cases.
Calluses usually develop on pressure points, such as heels or the balls of your feet.
What causes calluses?
Calluses are caused by friction and pressure on certain points of the skin. Callus removal is often needed for people who wear high heels for long periods of time as this foot issue can become recurring.
There are also a number of other factors that can cause calluses:
Ill-fitting shoes
Poorly fitted shoes can cause extra friction on your feet. This often occurs in shoes that are too narrow or small.
Wearing shoes without socks
As calluses are caused by friction, wearing socks increases the chance of calluses forming
Using hard tools, lifting weights or playing instruments
Strenuous activity can often cause calluses on hands. These can become painful and prevent you from working or doing the things you love, making callus and corn removal a necessary treatment.
What are corns?
Corns are smaller and deeper than calluses. They have a hard centre, surrounded by softer, swollen skin.
There are a number of different types of corns that we see and treat:
Hard corns
Hard corns are usually small, dense areas of thick skin. They often form on the top of toes where pressure or rubbing has been caused.
Soft corns
These are usually white or grey in colour. They have a rubbery texture that tends to form in between toes.
What causes corns?
There are a number of different factors that can result in corns developing:
Genetics
One type of corn, called the keratosis punctata, is thought to be caused by genetics. It forms on non weight-bearing areas of the foot, such as the soles and palms.
Abnormal bone structure
If you have any medical condition that has misaligned the bone structure in your feet, you may be more susceptible to corns.
These medical conditions may include arthritis or bone spurs.
Just like calluses, corns are also often caused by pressure points from ill-fitting shoes and not wearing socks.
Although the causes of these two foot conditions are similar, a foot specialist will identify the best and safest form of podiatry treatment for each case.
Possible complications with corns and calluses
It’s especially important to seek treatment for callus and corn removal if you suffer from diabetes, or another condition that can result in poor blood pressure to your feet.
If you do suffer from this type of medical issue, it’s important not to self-treat. This is because even a minor injury to your foot can cause an infected open wound, possibly leading to much more serious complications.
At the AGM Centre, we will take into consideration any medical issues you may have so that we can offer you the best possible treatment for your callus or corn removal.
